Dr. Lee Burton coaches five exercises that focus on core engagement and stability while developing upper body strength.
A dysfunctional score on the Trunk-Stability Push Up test of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is often an issue with core engagement, but it can also mean that you need to work on upper body strength.
In the Inclined Push up, reinforce good spine alignment. Use the lower body to provide a boost on the up stroke of the Assisted Pull Up. The Half-Kneeling Single Arm Forward Press uses a Cook Band and works on maintaining a stable base to resist rotation. The Bodyweight Forward Pull is another exercise that focuses on keeping a stable core. Finally, the Half-Kneeling Overhead Press with a kettlebell works on maintaining stability and developing strength simultaneously.
