STORYLINE:

Muslims throughout the Middle East marked the end of the fasting month of Ramadan on Thursday morning with prayers, visits to cemeteries and festive meals.

The celebrations, called Eid al-Fitr, last three days and are a time for family get-togethers, and exchanging gifts.

In Jerusalem, thousands of people converged on the Old City to pray at the al-Aqsa mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites.

The mosque was filled to capacity and many lined up in ranks to pray in the surrounding courtyard and gardens.

Lots of young children came in fancy dress; military outfits and guns being the most popular among boys.

It's a tradition that children receive new clothes and shoes for Eid al-Fitr.

In Gaza the streets filled with children who queued for turns on funfair rides and donkey rides.
