It’s easy to pretend,
Close your eyes
Or look the other way.
It’s easy to ignore
Others’ cries
Dismiss as lies
The hardship and the hunger
In this wealthy modern day.
It’s easy to forget
The injustice of the past
The tenements and squalor
That held poorer people fast
In their poverty, their sickness
And despair back in the day
Pretend that’s gone from modern Britain
As you look the other way.
But those times are fast returning
And we need to see them clear
‘Cause the wealthy never wanted
Those dark days to disappear.
Come on, take a look around you
See the hungry on the streets
See the houses standing empty
To raise rents for landlords’ treats
It’s not so sweet
As wages fall
And zero hours contracts
Often means no work at all.
We have to stop pretending
Or we’ll never have a chance
To reverse the trend, of ending
This vicious tory dance
With the devil of their greed
Whilst even basics others need
To survive
To thrive
To be alive
Are denied
By this snide
Nest of privileged vipers
It’s easy to pretend,
Close your eyes
Or look the other way.
It’s easy to ignore
Others’ cries
Dismiss as lies
