AMAZING GRACE - J. Newton - Alto Sax

this year Xmas will be very different from all the other Xmases we know. In Italy and in Europe at least, we are gonna face a lockdown and it won't be possible to see our relatives and loved ones so easily and in a relaxing and joyful way.

Many people, in particular elderly people and sick people, are gonna spend the most beautiful day of the year alone. This shatters my heart into a thousand pieces.

More than ever before, we should try to turn our spiritual eyes inward, trying to find our own Amazing Grace.

Although this is a holy song, a traditional Christian hymn, you don't need to believe in a Christian God to find inspiration on it, you can still look inside yourself and find the strength to face what I consider is gonna be the toughest period of this global pandemic.

I have chosen this church in Rome, Mausoleo di Santa Costanza, not just because it is stunningly beautiful, but for its very ancient history (it dates back to 350 AD) and its atmosphere, so intense and spiritual.

The altar is in the center and people attending church and praying are located all around it in a circle, in a different way from traditional Roman churches (made in the form of a Cross).

The image of the altar standing there like a mountain and the empty chairs scattered like tiny planets well depicts, in my opinion, what we are all feeling now. The distance separating us is tearing our souls apart.

Nevertheless, the altar in the center reminds us of how strong we can be. If we can build a church that can stand erect so magnificently over 1700 years, we, as a human race, can withstand extreme forces too.

But as we cannot compare the solidity of natural stones with the modern concrete (that disintegrates in 50 years), I see it as a metaphor as where to look to find strength.

Not in modern empty values I don't need to write down as we all know they won't work well for us or for anybody else, but in ancient traditional values that history itself tested again and again and proved to be solid as bedrock.

We all know what these values are.

I wish you a serene Xmas and I wish you to have the strength to be there for yourself and for your loved ones.
