I compare the new Perpetual Edition cello strings with the Perpetual Soloist D, G and C plus Magnacore Medium A. Use really good speakers! Click the times below to compare sound (Soloist and Edition respectively):
Open strings - 0:00 and 1:17
A strings - 0:46 and 2:10
D strings - 0:31 and 1:54
G strings - 0:08 and 1:31
C strings - 0:51 and 2:15
These clips were captured in a controlled environment–same room, acoustic setup, mic, software, and same bow. The only difference between the two clips is the strings.
My cello is a 2015 scaled-down Servais Stradivarius pattern instrument made of spruce top and maple ribs and back. She has a Belgian bridge, rosewood Dov Schmidt harp tailpiece with no tuners, kevlar tailcord, Pegheds machine pegs and a carbon fiber reinforcing rod in the neck. Her tone is on the brighter side but with plenty of Strad growl and a little Montagnana rumble. She is very revealing when it comes to different strings, so I'm capitalizing on that transparency to offer comparisons of the different strings available to us cellists.
The luthier that built my cello is Ben Beers of Gig Harbor, WA.
