A few months ago I saw a post on facebook about Ginko Synthese doing a limited run on the Tephra diode compressor. Diode compression (no idea how it works) is often associated with designs from Rupert Neve, a true pioneer in professional audio and studio consoles. Ginko is run by Jan Willem Hagenbeek (John William Haguecreek) and he convinced me he was not inspired by Neve. Since we both live in the same city, I was able to pick up two Tephra's (it's mono and I only do stereo) carrying serials 2 and 3. So these are pretty rare and exotic. Only 130 are made. It felt really good to support a small business like Ginko and to have something special in my rig.
So yes, this is a bit of a tribute to all the small companies who can make about 10 modules a week. If you're working on something special, let me know. Consider this a 'part 01' of an exotics series.
Besides, compression is still a tough subject for many of us, including me.
And yet, more and more modules start to emerge with compression on board, like the Endorphin.es Ghost. Tephra is analog and old school. You need to spend many hours to find the best sweetspot for your patch, and it can't make a chainsaw sound beautiful. It can easily emphasize the weakest parts in a patch, like module noise. But it's a valuable creative sculpting tool and it can do wonders on a drum kit. I will never forget getting lower grades at Abbey Road Institute for NOT using compression. So I am not an expert, I am just trying to figure out how to make something good sound better.
