Originating from "Grid" technology in the early 2000s, Globus has evolved into a modern Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solution, with the platform's core mission is to enhance researcher efficiency by simplifying the management of large-scale, distributed data and compute resources.

Its hybrid architecture connects on-premises resources (like supercomputers and lab instruments) to a central cloud management service via locally installed agents. This allows for secure and reliable data transfer, data sharing, and automation of complex workflows without the data itself passing through Globus's central servers.
