Hadjidakis, Tsarouchis, zeimbekiko, Χατζιδάκις, Τσαρούχης, ζεϊμπέκικος

Описание: Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994) and greek painter Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) created a recognisable idiom which acts as a hallmark in the local artistic expression in the decades of 1960 and 1970.

They were both shrewd observers of the world, day-dreamers and fighters. They created an imaginary world where ancient Greece, byzantine centuries, modern era and the popular music (outcasts´rebetica included) mingled scholarly in search of a contemporay ethos and morality. They both wrote fine texts, both gave battles to distinguish what is artificial and what is real. Their aim was to describe what would be the greek cultural identity and sensibility in the modern world. They were both cosmopolitans, exposed to the ideas of the western Europe but they knew that they were standing on the eastern part.

I am glad they are dead. They would be unhappy today, if happiness is what we are suppose to look for.

Love and sensuality is explicit in their work. We clearly deal in this video with pagan, idolatrous, idealistic love. Both artists willingly allowed the eastern orthodox religion to deal with the lift of the ancestral sin, with the redemption from the bonds of vanity. Narcissism is absent in their work. It is a puritanism-free art. Beauty is restored limpid, free of guilt.

Zeimbekikos: greek popular, urban, solo, male dance and music in 9\8 time. Of moody, reflective and grieved caracter, it used to be the emblem art of outcasts. It dates from the 19th century and was a favourite with the Greeks of Asia Minor. It migrated to mainland Greece with the incidents of 1922. Still in wide use today but expresses symptoms of cultural confusion!

The music in the video is the zeimbekiko ´´Karagozi´s dance`` from the ballet suite ´´the accursed snake`` by M. Hadjidakis, interpreted by two wonderful musical female cameleons: Marta Argerich and greek Dora Bakopoulou.

Most of the presented works by Yannis Tsarouchis bear the tittle, zeimbekiko. They come from his opus of multiples.
