1, 2. 항상, 늘 always
항상 and 늘 both mean “always”. Both words are used to describe something that does not change at any time. I think 늘 is more commonly used in casual conversation.
그는 항상 바쁘다. He is always busy.
늘 너의 곁에 있을게. I will always be with you.
3. 대개 usually
대개 means usually or in general. People use 보통 more often and 대개 is seen more in writing.
대개 아홉 시에 출근해. I usually go to work at 9 o'clock.
부모님 말씀이 대개 옳아. Parents are usually right.
4. 보통 normally, generally
보통 can be used both as a noun and as an adverb, as a noun, it means the state of being normal or ordinary. And as an adverb, it means normally or generally.
퇴근하고 집에 가서 보통 뭐해? What do you normally do at home after work?
보통 누워서 넷플릭스 봐. I usually watch Netflix lying down.
5. 자주 often, frequently
자주 describes the state of something being repeated at short intervals. Also 자주 is a homonym, 자주색 means purple.
우리집에 자주 놀러 와. Come to my place more often.
부모님한테 자주 연락드려. You need to call your parents more often.
6. 가끔 sometimes
가끔 means sometimes or once in a while. 가끔 can also be used as 가끔씩, which means at times.
넌 가끔 딴 세상에 있는 것 같아. Sometimes you look like you’re in another world.
가끔씩 지난 추억에 잠기거든. I reminisce sometimes.
7. 때때로 occasionally
때때로 means from time to time, depending on the situation.
흐리고 때때로 비 cloudy with occasional rain
보통은 집에서 혼자 밥 먹는데 때때로 친구들이랑 외식해. Generally I eat by myself at home, but occasionally I dine out with my friends.
8. 좀처럼 ~하지 않는다 seldom
There are no equivalent Korean words for seldom, hardly, rarely, never. You have to make negative statements to describe these adverbs. 좀처럼 ~하지 않는다 means not able to easily do something.
우리 언니는 너무 착해서 좀처럼 화를 내지 않아. My elder sister is so nice, she seldom gets angry.
너랑 정 반대네. 너는 좀처럼 언니 말을 듣지 않잖아. She’s completely opposite to you. You seldom obey her words.
9. 거의 ~하지 않는다 hardly, rarely
거의 means nearly and almost. So 거의 ~하지 않는다 means to hardly do something.
코로나 바이러스 때문에 집밖에 거의 나가지 않았어. Because of COVID-19 I hardly went outside.
너 원래도 집밖에 거의 안 나가잖아. You hardly go out from the beginning.
10. 절대 ~하지 않는다 never
절대 can be used both as a noun and as an adverb, with the meaning of absolute and absolutely. For example, 절대 권력 means absolute power and 절대 음감 means perfect pitch. 절대 ~하지 않는다 means to never do something.
내 비밀 절대 다른 사람한테 말하면 안 돼! Never tell my secret to other people!
당연하지! 절대 얘기 안 해. Of course! My lips are sealed.
