American astronaut David Wolf put on a Russian space suit on Monday, and plunged underwater to carry out simulated repairs on the Mir space station.
Wolf will replace Michael Foale on the beleaguered station next month when the American space shuttle docks with Mir.
A model of the Mir space station hangs above a water tank, about to be submerged for a training exercise.
American David Wolf is the latest astronaut-turned-cosmonaut.
He's the next to try to bring some semblance of order to the troubled Mir.
Wolf has been undergoing extensive repair training since it was announced that he will replace Michael Foale.
A series of space walks are planned in the coming months and Wolf is expected to participate in some of the most dangerous repair jobs.
This under water version of Mir, at Russia's cosmonaut training ground, Star City, allows astronauts and cosmonauts to simulate the necessary repairs in conditions similar to zero gravity.
Wolf was assisted by four divers as he practised repairs.
Meanwhile, as Wolf underwent his training, on the other side of Earth the space shuttle Atlantis was being rolled out to a launch pad at Kennedy Space Center - being prepared for next month's mission to dock with Mir.
