Описание:
Colourful bleaching is a recurring phenomenon in reef regions around the globe and can be indicative of brief or mild heat stress episodes or underlying nutrient stress. The changes in colouration are caused by an optical feedback loop involving coral host and algal symbiont and involve a blue-light driven upregulation of host pigments following bleaching. The photoprotective host pigments in bleached tissue can aid recolonization by symbiont algae. This research has been undertaken by Professor Jörg Wiedenmann at the University of Southampton.
