In January 2026, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) released data confirming one of the most successful long-range drone campaigns of the war. Throughout 2025, the SBU's elite Alpha special operations unit conducted precision strikes against five Russian military airbases located deep inside Russian territory — far from the front lines.
The results were devastating. Fifteen aircraft were destroyed, including eleven combat jets: Su-30SM and Su-27 Flanker fighters, Su-34 Fullback strike aircraft, Su-24 Fencer bombers, and two MiG-31 Foxhound interceptors. Additionally, three helicopters (Mi-8, Mi-26, and Mi-28) and one An-26 transport plane were eliminated.
The total damage exceeded $1 billion — representing not just the cost of the airframes but also the pilots, training, and maintenance infrastructure Russia cannot easily replace.
What makes these strikes remarkable is the distance involved. These airbases were considered safe zones, far beyond the range of conventional weapons. Ukrainian forces used long-range FPV drones and loitering munitions to reach targets that Russian air defenses failed to protect.
The SBU statement was blunt: "The enemy is used to feeling safe in the deep rear. But for Alpha special forces, distance has long ceased to matter." The campaign demonstrated that no Russian military asset is beyond Ukraine's reach — a psychological blow as significant as the material losses.
