Video #1 of 5 (June 23, 2022):
In which, I made my return to the one and only Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve near Yellow Springs. This was my home away from home and a second home away from home. I was a volunteer here for up to 2 years while attending Wittenberg University. There was a chance to learn how to provide public tours and to provide conservation education and practices (e.g. invasive plant removal).
Here is a video with which I explain the geology and how Clifton Gorge came to be. It is a post-glacial stream roughly 18,000 years old. As the glaciers retreated, there were two lobes (Miami and Scioto). Between them was the Kennard Outwash Terrace, which was what flattened out the land and allowed the formation of the Little Miami River. In the process of River formation, erosion occurred and created the Gorge itself.
Bedrock layers include Cedarvile Dolomite as well as Euphemia and Springfield Limestone. These formed above the Osgood Shale (more prone to erosion). As a result, this creates the Niagara Escarpment as you can find the same bedrock at Niagara Falls.
