In a country that produced legends like Manny Pacquiao, many young Filipino fighters dream of becoming the next world champion. One of the names slowly earning respect in the boxing scene today is Carlo Bacaro — a hardworking fighter from Negros Oriental who carries the classic Filipino boxer mentality: quiet, hungry, and fearless.

Known by the nickname “Brown Sugar” and sometimes called “Workhorse,” Bacaro represents the new generation of Pinoy boxers trying to climb the brutal international boxing ladder one fight at a time. Born in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, and fighting out of Cebu City, Bacaro built his career the old-school way — through discipline, roadwork, gym wars, and accepting difficult fights many prospects would avoid.

Standing around 5-foot-7 with an orthodox stance, Bacaro developed a reputation as an aggressive pressure fighter with respectable knockout power. Early in his professional career, he impressed local boxing fans by collecting multiple knockout victories while remaining unbeaten. Boxing analysts in Southeast Asia even considered him one of the more exciting prospects coming out of Cebu’s respected Omega Gym stable.

What separates Bacaro from many rising fighters is his willingness to take risks. Instead of protecting an undefeated record against weak opposition, he accepted international fights against dangerous opponents. That old Filipino boxing mentality still exists in fighters like him — “kahit saan, laban.” No excuses. No careful matchmaking.

In 2025, Bacaro faced undefeated Russian boxer Pavel Sosulin in Armenia during an IBA Champions’ Night event. It was a massive opportunity and also a dangerous assignment. Bacaro entered the fight carrying an impressive winning streak and several knockout victories, proving that Filipino fighters are still respected globally for their toughness and heart.

Although Bacaro suffered setbacks in some international bouts, including fights in Japan and Europe, those losses did not erase the respect he earned. In boxing, especially for Filipino fighters traveling abroad, experience matters. Many world champions from the Philippines suffered defeats early in their careers before eventually reaching another level.

That is the reality of Philippine boxing. Fighters often travel overseas as underdogs, entering hostile arenas against hometown favorites. Yet time and time again, Filipino boxers continue to shock the world because of their grit, conditioning, and willingness to fight anybody.

Bacaro embodies that tradition.

He may not yet have the fame of champions like Nonito Donaire or Donnie Nietes, but he represents the backbone of Philippine boxing — hardworking provincial fighters chasing greatness through sacrifice. Fighters like Bacaro keep the sport alive in the Philippines.

At only his mid-20s, Bacaro still has time to improve, rebuild, and chase bigger opportunities. In boxing, careers are not always defined by undefeated records. Sometimes, the fighters who survive the hard road become the most dangerous veterans later on.

And if there is one thing history taught boxing fans, it is this: never count out a hungry Filipino fighter.
