Speaking in Cyprus during the visit of the College of Commissioners under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent a firm geopolitical signal on Greenland and the Arctic.
She made it clear that Greenland can count on the European Union politically, economically and financially, revealing that EU funding for Greenland has been doubled and that a permanent EU office has been established on the ground to deepen cooperation with the Greenlandic government and people.
Von der Leyen stressed that Arctic security is not a distant issue but a core priority for the European Union, closely linked to NATO and cooperation with allies, including the United States. A strong message of commitment, investment and strategic presence in one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical regions.
