Why do ASL signs look alike? 🤟
Just like the words there, their, and they're sound the same in spoken language, many signs share similar features. ASL uses 5 Parameters to tell these signs apart.
The 5 Building Blocks
1. Handshape: The specific shape of your hand, like the "open 5" used for "fine" or "Mom".
2. Movement: Whether the sign stays still or moves, like the difference between "Mom" and "Grandma". 3. Location: Where the sign happens, such as the chest, chin, or forehead.
4. Palm Orientation: Which way your palm faces, like sideways for "Mom" versus facing down.
5. Non-Manual Markers: What your face and mouth are doing to change the meaning.
