Meet Obi-Wan Kenobi, a brave kitten who arrived at Little Buddies on Sunday, April 14, along with his two brothers, Yoda and Vader. From the moment of his arrival, it was evident that Obi was different. His tiny chest had an unusual shape, and his breaths were shallow and labored. Each inhalation seemed like a struggle as his chest compressed visibly. Something was clearly wrong, and so we rushed him to the emergency vet for treatment.

Obi was soon diagnosed with pectus excavatum, a genetic condition that causes the rib cage to curve inward toward the heart. As Obi grows, the curvature will increasingly endanger his life by compressing his heart and lungs. The dire need for corrective surgery was clear, as every day without intervention posed a greater risk to his fragile life. It is essential to provide Obi with this treatment while he is still young, and his bones or more flexible, to speed up the healing process and ensure he is free from this looming danger. We have no doubt that he will come through this surgery with flying colors.

On June 13th, Obi is scheduled to undergo a complex and costly surgery to address this severe condition. A specialized external chest plate will be sewn directly to his rib bones. This procedure (which costs $6,285.94) will reshape and expand his chest cavity, providing his heart, lungs, and diaphragm the necessary space to grow and function properly. During the first month post-surgery, Obi will need weekly sedated adjustments to the chest plate (costing $968.99 each visit) to ensure his bones stabilize in the correct position. These necessary treatments come at a steep financial burden, amounting to $1,0161.9.
