Salt shortages in Northeast Ohio force cities, plow companies to find solutions amid winter weather

Описание: Northeast Ohio is running low on a critical winter resource: salt.

“It's definitely concerning if we don't have the product to keep those streets clean,” said Cleveland Heights Mayor Jim Petras.

The shortage has become so severe that this week, Cleveland Heights had to borrow 150 tons of salt from a neighboring city.


“Suppliers are facing a supply chain issue right now and so that means that a lot of cities across Cuyahoga County are really struggling,” Petras said.

Petras told 3News he spoke with about 20 other mayors across Cuyahoga County over the weekend who are all facing similar shortages. He said it’s causing some cities to change how they salt their roads.

For example, according to the mayor, one city in the area that typically salts everything is now just focusing on its main roads and hills.

“It’s not an ideal situation,” said Mayor Petras.

The salt shortage is also taking a toll on commercial snowplowing companies.
