A YouTuber by the name Paras Singh is in big trouble because of his extremely insensitive and reckless comments against the people of Arunachal Pradesh in one of his recent videos. After the video went viral, the Arunachal Pradesh government filed a case against Paras Singh for his racial remarks against a Congress MLA and people of the state.

Paras Singh, who lives in Punjab and goes by the name ''Paras Official'' on his YouTube channel, had posted a video on Sunday calling Congress MLA Ninong Ering a "non-Indian" and said that “Arunachal Pradesh was a part of China." Obviously, this sparked huge anger among not just the people of Arunachal Pradesh but also in people from all over India.

Giving details about Paras’s arrest DGP RP Upadhyaya said, “A case has been registered against Paras for spreading racial hatred and the cyber-crime branch in Itanagar is investigating the matter.”

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to twitter to condemn the racial slur by Paras and said the "video aims at inciting ill will and hatred towards the people of Arunachal Pradesh".

The state Deputy Chief Minister also underlined that he was "appalled and greatly dismayed" to see the YouTube post, which not just "casts doubt on the nationality of the Arunachal Pradesh MLA but also questions the existence of the state within India".

Paras Singh had apparently made the comments while reacting to a letter written by Congress MLA Ninong Ering to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wherein he had sought a ban on the relaunch of PUBG Mobile as Battlegrounds Mobile India.

What is most baffling is the fact that while the MLA is striving to stop the re-entry of PUBG a
Chinese mobile game, which was banned after the Indo-China skirmish last year in Ladakh, Paras in-turn accused Ering and the people from Arunachal Pradesh as those who are close to China and hence controlled by China. It doesn’t even make any sense.

And Paras didn’t just stop at that. In addition to the personal remarks aimed at the legislator, Paras Singh also pointed to a map of India in his video to say, "Arre yar ye toh China ke side mein hai "

|And then he added, "Ye China walo ka hi hai… ek tarah se unhi ke sath hi hai”

Soon after these irresponsible and racist comments, Paras Singh started getting bombarded with hate messages from all over the globe. The social media pressure started building up and the video drew a lot of flak and attention from even the government of Arunachal Pradesh, who swung into action.

By then, Paras realized that he had made a big mistake and started apologizing for his unruly comments and he even put out a video saying that he had indeed made a mistake. But by then, clearly it was too little too late.

Now, an emotional video of his mother has appeared on his channel where she is expressing concern for her only son and saying that he has been taken away by the cops.

They say, nothing ever dies on the internet and often what we say and do in the virtual world can have a huge impact in the real world – not just in our lives, our families and in the lives of those who follow us.

To quote the cliché, I would say, with great power, comes great responsibility. YouTubers and social media influencers, who gain instant name and fame often get carried away by these transient perks. In a bid to clock likes shares and subscribers they often forget what harm their actions can bring to them, their families and others.

What Paras thought was a harmless joke has stirred emotions of millions who have been battling such racism and discrimination in their own country for years. Like the All-Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union said in its statement. “It is distressing that even after over 70 years of the country’s independence, people from the state and the northeast region in general face humiliation in other parts of the country, whenever they go there for work or study,”

The joint statement further read, "To doubt our nationality because of how we look is a problem most of us from the North East of India face regularly in the mainland. What we look like, how we dress, what we eat and how we live makes us no less Indian.”

Paras has 458 thousand people following him. We can only hope that if and when he gets back to creating content, he will do so with responsibility and tact.
