The Historic Olney House Story:
Built in 1798, the Olney mansion became home to the first institution of higher learning for Black students on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. In September 1886, President Benjamin O. Byrd and his wife Portia founded what would become UMES, purchasing the elegant colonial-style property for just $2,000 based on a recommendation by Mary Wilson, wife of a local reverend.
Trivia Questions Include:
How many students enrolled in UMES's first year?
Which institutions partnered to establish the university?
What architectural style honors the original Olney building today?
And more surprising facts about HBCU history!
From 9 Students to a Legacy:
The institution started with only 9 students and grew to 37 by the end of its first academic year. Founded through a partnership between the Delaware Conference of Methodist Episcopal Church and the Centenary Biblical Institute, our HBCU began a tradition of excellence that continues today.
Architectural Heritage:
The original Olney building featured elegant arched windows and Flemish bond brickwork. For 86 years, it served as an administrative building, dining hall, and classroom facility. Though demolished in the late 1960s, its legacy lives on - the buildings around the Academic Oval today are designed in Colonial Revival style as a tribute to Olney's architectural influence.
