When was the first time you were called beautiful—and what did it cost you?
In Before Beauty Was Chained, Ayooluwa O. (Crowned Poet) delivers a deeply moving spoken word performance that traces how beauty, innocence, and self-worth are gradually reshaped by loss, patriarchy, objectification, and digital culture.
Through a series of haunting “firsts,” this piece explores grief, grooming, societal expectations, classroom judgment, and the algorithmic pressures that redefine beauty into something conditional and cruel. What begins as affirmation slowly becomes control—until beauty itself is chained to vanity and approval.
This performance was produced as part of the Punpoets Mentorship Program, which nurtures poets to refine their craft while courageously telling stories that confront culture, gender, and identity.
