The Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) at ICANN is a key forum where governments come together to provide input on Internet policy development. Through the GAC, governments have a direct role in shaping the Internet’s future alongside technical experts, civil society, and other stakeholders.
Cheryl Langdon-Orr, ALAC (ISOC AU), Rodney Taylor, Secretary General, Caribbean Telecommunications Union, and Alan Davidson, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and NTIA Administrator, share how the GAC’s proactive involvement in policy development is a testament to the positive experiences governments have within ICANN’s multistakeholder model. This collaboration is crucial to building effective policies.
Government participation adds legitimacy to the process, ensuring policies align with national goals for economic and social development. Governments must have a voice in decisions that impact how the Internet evolves over time. Diverse government participation within the GAC is critical to ensure inclusive and balanced policymaking. When governments actively engage, the Internet governance process becomes stronger and more representative.
An inclusive and effective Internet governance model needs the active participation of governments worldwide.
