The video by Ruben Caljé for his 2009 MSc Thesis at TUDelft, shows the development of a growing number of ATES (Aquifer Thermal Energy Systems) in a situation without any prescription as to where to place new warm and cold wells. The overall system organizes itself into bands with hardly lower overall efficiency then with master plans that prescribe placement in warm and cold lanes. This self-organizing is due to the fact that every owner seeks maximum efficiency and, therefore, places the warm well of the new system near existing warm wells and the cold well of the new system near other cold wells.
