He says he is more embarrassed for the VAR officials than the young referee on the pitch and highlights what he sees as growing inconsistency around red cards, handball penalties and dissent across the season.

He acknowledges Everton have had several key decisions go against them, referencing incidents involving Tyler Dibling against Burnley and a missed penalty against Arsenal, but insists he does not want to blame everybody else and accepts the team must also take responsibility amid injuries, AFCON absences and suspensions. With Michael Keane banned and players like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz, Jarrad Branthwaite and Seamus Coleman still out, plus Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Moyes admits the squad is stretched and January recruitment is difficult, stressing the club would prefer long term signings over short term fixes.

Moyes praises the recent impact of young midfielder Harrison Armstrong and the development of Tim Iroegbunam, but warns both still need consistency. He confirms Jordan Pickford is expected to start in goal and says whoever gets an opportunity must be ready to take it. Looking ahead to the tie, Moyes speaks about what the FA Cup means to him and the supporters, recalling his previous runs to Wembley and semi final shootout wins, and says there are “not too many more difficult draws” than in form Sunderland. However, he believes having a home tie gives Everton a big advantage and promises his side will have a “good go” at progressing to the next round.
