Polit Affairs - United states has been skeptical about developing military cooperation between Russia and Iran for a reason, and we are gradually understanding the practical outcome it can have in the middle east.
We already know that Russia is supplying Iran with advanced Sukhoi su-35 jets and it has been approved by Iranian officials, though recently some new reports show that this deal is much more that that.
days after a military official of Iran confirmed that Tehran will soon receive Helicopters, tanks and anti-missile systems from Russia in return for the kamikaze drones they have been using in Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War referenced an editorial published by the Iranian news agency saying how a "Russo-Iranian joint production deal could allow Iran to receive Russian Mi-28 and Ka-52 attack helicopters."
The upgraded variants of the Russian Mi-28 and Ka-52 have been previously described by the Russian state media as the "cutting edge" of Moscow's attack helicopter arsenal. The Ka-52 is Russia's "most advanced attack helicopter," Forbes wrote in 2020 as Russia tested out its upgraded Ka-52M.
There have been several variants of the Mi-28 and Ka-52 that have been updated to provide—among other benefits—increased night operational capability and enhanced weaponry.
According to Kremlin-linked media outlet TASS, the Ka-52 attack helicopter is designed to destroy tanks, rotorcraft, and armored vehicles on the battlefield "under any weather conditions and at any time of the day or night."
Able to accelerate to 186 mph with an operating range of 740 miles, the Ka-52 can carry a payload of 2.5 tons, the outlet reported. It is also fitted with laser-guided anti-tank missiles and rockets.
Variants of both the Ka-52 and Mi-28 have been used in Ukraine, according to Russian state media, with TASS reporting on the two attack helicopters "wiping out enemy strongholds and armor" in the war-torn country.
Describing the Mi-28NE, TASS said the helicopter is designed to "destroy aerial targets, tanks, and armor and can also be employed for reconnaissance and patrols."
Outfitted with a 30 mm gun and "three types" of anti-tank missiles with a range of up to six miles, the Mi-28NE's rotor blades "can withstand strikes by 30 mm shells."
According to many experts, the delivery of such sophisticated weaponry and the expansion of military cooperation between Iran and Russia would not only influence the distribution of military power in the region but also serve as a signal to western nations and their leading regional partner Israel.
The outdated AH-1J International variant of the Cobra, which Tehran purchased from Washington in the early 1970s, makes up most of Iran’s current inventory of attack helicopters. Iran produced the Toufan I and Toufan II versions of the AH-1J in the 2010s.
For Iran this deal is very important, as it has serious shortage of modern military helicopters, which play vital role in any conflict. except for helicopters and fighter jets, Iran also needs modern tanks, submarines and warships, and these are also discussed between Moscow and Tehran. while they are actively carrying out these agreements, in a year or two, balance of power in the middle east and all over the world might be seriously different from what we see today.
