Nils Nilsson Skum became a famous sketch artist in his later years, when he decided to end working with reindeer. In this news reel from 1945, he is at home in Šišká / Sjisjka in Northern Kaitum, a remote place in the middle of nowhere. Still, his fame made the Swedish Railroad build a railroad with a Station at his homeplace, due to all the visits he got and all the travelling he did to his exhibits.
He is a relative of my mother's family, but it is almost 180 year since the Skum family split in half, when Thomas Nilsen Skum left Guovdageaidnu and moved to Karesuando in 1837, and his grandson Nils was then born in Karesuando district in 1872.
The news reels were a weekly based event on cinemas in the days before TV existed, made by Svensk Filmindustri. This particular clip was sent on the 23rd of April in 1945. The original reel of this movie article concerning Skum's work is longer than this colourised version I show here, that is just a shortcut from that reel.
