TEARS OF A CLOWN - SOMKEY ROBINSON | FRANKS BASS COVERS #shorts2026
Bassists: James Jamerson, Bob Babbitt, Tony Newton???
Song Notes:
Released Sept 1970/recorded 1967?
Apparently, this was one of those songs which had multiple bass players and the final cut is being claimed by Bob Babbitt although there are several sources claiming it was Jamerson and Newton.
The original idea for the song pre-dates 1967. Stevie Wonder approached Smokey with elements of the tune and Smokey thought it had a fairground type sound. That's where the clown association began.
Smokey at that time must had something of an obsession with Pagliacci and so the Tears of a Clown was born. How many other soul tracks manage to include the name Pagliacci??
Bass Cover
Still can’t get over how busy his bass lines are in these Motown songs… I fat fingered in a couple of places but no matter, this was a learning moment for me.
