In the early 1960s, turbocharging was not something associated with everyday road cars. It was used in aircraft, industrial machinery, and experimental engineering projects - not in family coupes sold through ordinary dealerships.
And yet, in 1962, General Motors quietly put a turbocharged production car on the road.
The Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire became the world’s first mass-produced automobile equipped with a turbocharged engine - years before Porsche, Saab, or BMW brought the technology into the mainstream.
It was a bold and technically ambitious experiment that combined a lightweight aluminum V8, a Garrett turbocharger, and an unusual water-methanol injection system designed to control detonation.
On paper, the Jetfire looked like the future.
In reality, it proved just how far ahead of its time turbocharging really was.
