Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” (1994) is the kind of hit that proves heavy radio rock can still be weird, rhythmic, and genuinely adventurous. Written by Chris Cornell and released as the lead single from Superunknown, it pulls a classic Soundgarden trick: turn something raw and street-level into something massive.
The song was inspired by Seattle street performer Artis the Spoonman, who literally plays spoons on the track (and appears in the video). That clattering, human groove isn’t a gimmick—it’s the heartbeat of the whole arrangement, pushing the riff into that off-kilter swing Soundgarden did better than anyone.
And if anyone still clings to the “grunge had no good guitar playing” narrative, “Spoonman” undercuts it in four minutes flat. Kim Thayil’s lead work here is about personality: jagged phrasing, gnarly tone, and lines that feel like they’re wrestling the rhythm section on purpose.
No surprise this track became one of the era’s defining singles—and even snagged a Grammy for Best Metal Performance (even though it's not metal--but no surprise there since Grammy folks thought Jethro Tull was metal!)
