At 105 years of age, Alexandrina Council's authentic wood fired, paddle steamer PS Oscar "W" will not be spending the rest of its days moored at the Goolwa Wharf.
The Oscar W, was built in 1908 at Echuca and started life as a freight carrier before being used to cart wool up and down the Murray from 1914. In 1964 restoration of the Oscar W was started till she was sold to the SA Tourism Commission in 1984 and recommissioned for duty in 1988.
The Oscar W was bought by Alexandrina Council for the princely sum of $1 -- evidence of Council's commitment to preserving the region's heritage. However, not too many Council's own paddle steamers. (This is maintained and operated by a team of local volunteers).
Oscar "W" still plies the Murray River carrying tourists and this year she is being pressed back into service to tow the PS Canally from Morgan to Berri for slipping and replanking.
