On November 3, 2012, the renowned Union Pacific 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive 844 stopped in Amarillo on its journey from Houston back to Cheyenne. The 844 is a giant in its own right, boasting a tractive effort of 66,000 pounds!
But standing proudly with her was the mighty AT&SF 2-10-4 Steam Locomotive 5000*, famously known as the *"MADAME QUEEN"! As the mother of the largest and most powerful 2-cylinder steam locomotives ever built, the Madame Queen dwarfs her counterpart with an advertised tractive effort rating of 93,000 pounds!
It was a truly special day for fans of both the 844 and the 5000—a one-of-a-kind opportunity to celebrate these two magnificent titans side-by-side!
