A day in the water (or weekend!) is an amazing way to discover a country that has been literally described as the path between the seas. Here is a bit of a framework to help you organize your boat adventure in Panama.
First: Understand the weather in Panama. The Caribbean and Pacific are separated by mountains (the Cordillera) and the winds switch directions seasonally, so the coasts are very different!
–Summer = Late December to early April. Generally it is sunny and dry on the Pacific Side. Strong North wind. Note that the North wind on the Caribbean side comes from open ocean so it gets very rough over there. On the Pacific Side the north wind is “offshore” so while you can get a bit of chop, it’s not a huge deal.
–Wet Season: May - September. Generally calm winds. It rains, but not every day and not every place. For power boating, it’s quite nice. You normally get a cloud canopy to cut the sun and intermittent showers. Not enough wind for sailing.
–Crazy Season: October and November. This is when the Pacific gets rain and south winds, occasionally whipped up into storms. So unless you are hunting Wahoo (which run hard then) better not plan boating in those months. HOWEVER: it is the perfect time on the Caribbean side. Light winds and often sunny. So plan away!
Second: How much time do you have:
–Half Day on the lake. This is really one of the most fun, economical and best pick. Works all year round, you see the Canal, the ships and most likely wildlife. Bring some beer and sandwiches. (call Puma: +507 6924-9042)
–One Day Fishing: Here our absolute recommendation is Blue Adventures. https://blueadventurespanama.com/. They are incredible, know all the spots and are fantastic fishermen. Then, you can go to their restaurant Maagoos and eat your catch! I can´t recommend them enough. Maagoos is the place you´ll keep coming back to every time you are in Panama, whether you went fishing with them or not.
–One Day Cruising: (also with Blue Adventures). Go to the Pearl Islands. Pack a picnic (or ask Blue Adventures for a package with picnic) and go to St Bartalome, Mogu Mogu or whichever beach is best that day (depends on tide and wind). In the summer it can get windy, so be prepared for a bit of chop on the way home. It is all part of the adventure!
–Two or more days: go to San Blas. San Blas Sailing or I travel by boat (https://www.itravelbyboat.com/). Rent a Catamaran, it is the best way. You get plenty of room for everyone, plus it is more stable.
