Years after her death, a poet’s life and work speak across the generations, inspiring new music and more intentional living. Jane Tyson Clement’s observation of the seasons of the soul and of the natural world have made her poems beloved to many readers, most recently singer-songwriter Becca Stevens. Jane’s poetry has gained new life as lyrics in the songs of this pioneering musician of another century. This book, The Heart’s Necessities, weaves Jane’s poetry and the story of her life together with beautiful photography and Becca’s own thoughts about creativity, art, and life.
Jane Tyson Clement wrote “105” as a young woman in 1940. Becca writes: “Jane reminds us to accept the darkness from the onset because it’s part of the nature of life. You don’t know the way, you can’t possibly. The only thing you can be sure of is that life and love will not be purely joy, or purely sorrow. They aren’t meant to be. There is both darkness and light at the root of any experience. By accepting that, you turn a difficult struggle into a graceful dance.”
Lyrics by Jane Tyson Clement (1917–2000)
Music by Becca Stevens
There are things to be remembered
when the heart is old,
and many words are waiting
before the tale is told;
for many hawks are plunging
upon the summer air,
and still the mice are creeping,
and still the world is fair.
A necessary evil
is portioned to the heart;
we might as well acknowledge
the devil from the start
and know the hasty blossom
as swiftly will decay,
while other flowers are waiting
to grace a forward day.
It is foolish to have wisdom
and folly to be blind;
to see and take and question
must nourish any mind;
reserve a quiet judgment
until the heart is old,
when fewer words are needed
before the tale is told.
