Episode 5 contains 7 more airports situated in the Alps and around the Mediterranean. From large holiday destinations like Samos and Innsbruck, we travel to smaller airfield, very small airfields for that matter. Thanks once again to samuele geography for his suggestions, and if you have one of your own, dont hesitate to put it in the comment section. The airports (and aircraft used) are as follows:
1. Known as the Greek St. Maarten, Skiathos definitely lives up to the name. With a short 1628m runway sandwiched between the Aegean sea and hills, one can see how such a comparison can be made. The photoreal ground scenery is by Angelo Tassoglou and the airport files are by George Keogh (found at avsim.com). The aircraft is the freeware A320 by project Airbus
2. Samedan is better known for its nearby ski-resorts than for its airport. The airport's location in the middle of the Alps and the VFR approach means that it is certainly a contender for this list. Frequent bad weather can also force airplanes landing to divert to Zürich. Due to the airports elevation and 1800m runway, the largest aircraft certified to land there are A319. Scenery is freeware from ORBX (downloaded from fullterrain.com/freeware) and the aircraft is the freeware Project Airbus A318.
3. Macedonia is a country I actually never fly in and out of, but it has a nice trio of tiny airports that offer a nice challenge. Titov veles has a mere 299m runway, which poses a challenge even in most small aircraft. Luckily, the Dehavilland Dash-7 used in this video (lovely aircraft, by Milton Shupe) has excellent short field performance (at full flaps and half fuel), so i managed to get it off the runway with at least 20 meters to spare. Scenery is default (not very accurate, but does the job fine)
4. Imroz (or Göçkeada) Airport isn't well known in the flightsim community, I only happened to stumble across it while i was doing a slow VFR flight around the Greek Islands. Its 2040 metre runway is more than adequate to handle the military flights and occasional Embraers that visit the airport, but the terrain to the south makes for a difficult approach. Aircraft is the VC-10 by David Maltby and Dave brooker and the scenery is photoreal by Ahmet Mehmetbeyoglu (found at Avsim.com)
5. In contrast to Imroz, Innsbruck is well-known both in the flight sim community and outside. Its ski-resorts attract large amounts of tourists, but its airport poses a challenge to pilots. Landing on runway 09 involves flying through the Inn-valley, although there is a beacon on the top of the mountain for smaller aircraft. Scenery is (should be) default, and the aircraft used is the payware Qualitywings 757.
6. Located in Montenegro, Tivat is the country's busiest airport, although I didnt hear about it before i encountered it at freewarescenery.com (great website, I highly reccomend frequent visits). The default scenery is quite mediocre, but the ex-payware scenery by skyhighsim breathes new life into the airport. Although the runway is 2500m long and capable of handling Il-96, the approaches involve a lot of circling and turning before aligning last-minute with the runway. The Tupolev Tu-114 is freeware by Samdim design.
7. Finally, Samos. Aerosoft has made a great rendition of the Island, but there is a great freeware alternative by Dimitris Ntaskas and George Keogh available at Avsim.com(two seperate files, one for photoscenery, one for the airport). Its approach is known for its sharp turns to align witht he runway, on the west due to high terrain, and on the east due to the island's proximity to Turkey and Turkish airspace. Aircraft is the payware CLS MD-81.
Airports not included but worth a glance:
Corfu (Ioannis Kapodistrias airport)
Palermo (Punta Raisi Airport) (thanks to samuele geography for the suggestion, sadly i couldnt include it so I have added it here)
St. Stephan
Happy Flying!
