Hello and welcome to my YouTube Channel; my name is Sotonye Afiesimama and this is TiH for the 27th of January. Join me as we journey through history and I share important events as recorded on this day in history.

Coming up in today's TiH:

Intrigued? All will be revealed in a few minutes.

1832
Mathematician and novelist Lewis Carroll, especially remembered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass (1871), was born in Daresbury, Cheshire, England.

1880
American inventor Thomas Edison patented the incandescent lamp.

1925
King Ramanna, the leading physicist of the country - India - was born.
Raja Ramanna (28 January 1925 – 24 September 2004) was an Indian physicist who is best known for his role in India's nuclear program during its early stages.
Having joined the nuclear program in 1964, Ramanna worked under Homi Jehangir Bhabha, and later became the director of this program in 1967.

1929
Mohamed al-Fayed
Egyptian businessman. He is the 1,031st-richest person in the world.

1930
Blues signer Robert Calvin Bland born in Rosemark, Tennessee. He is a blues singer and is sometimes referred to as the "Lion of the Blues". He is most well known for a series of hit releases including "Cry Cry Cry," "I Pity The Fool", "Turn On Your Love Light" and "Ain't No Love In the Heart of the City".

1943
Nigerian Spokesman newspaper founded by Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe to fight colonialism.
Of course, as you have probably noticed, Azikiwe's newspaper venture was a business and political tool. This was just one of his many forays into the newspaper publishing business.

1945
The Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, Poland, was liberated by Soviet troops.

1956
Mayflower School was founded on January 27, 1956 by Dr. Tai Solarin, a Nigerian educator, humanist and civil rights pioneer, who was married to Sheila Mary Tuer, an English woman; they had two children Corin and Tunde Solarin. The school is located on a vast piece of land in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria. It is a 90 acres of land school. Named after the historical Mayflower ship that brought the first batch of pilgrims to the United States. Like the pilgrims, Solarin founded the school in personal rebellion against religious persecution.

Mayflower preaches a very strong educational philosophy grounded in self-reliance, self-sacrifice, public service and physical toughness. In Solarin's words, the students must be "rugged." The school's sound academic reputation has produced a long record of achievements, including the first national female chemical engineer and Nigerian-British boxer, Anthony Joshua.

1972
Mahalia Jackson
Legendary vocalist passes away in Evergreen Park, ILL.
She was an American gospel singer, widely considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century. With a career spanning 40 years, Jackson was integral to the development and spread of gospel blues in black churches throughout the U.S. During a time when racial segregation was pervasive in American society,

2018

Coming up in tomorrow's TiH:
pride, prejudice, two American artists; Sarkozy, Dostoyevsky and of course loads more!
Intrigued? See you tomorrow when all will be revealed. Stay safe!
