For just one drop of blood a day you too can subtract 1d4 from important rolls for your enemies.
I’m John a forever DM and adventure writer at dumbestdnd.com and today we’re looking at a 1st level enchantment spell called BANE. [insert bane clip] Available to Bards and Clerics, this spell let’s you subtract a d4 from saving throws and attack rolls for up to three creatures of your choice. This is one of many first-level spells where pretty much any spellcaster can figure out a way to snag it if desired.
Sitting at a range of 30 feet, a casting time of one action and an concentration length of one minute, Bane debuffs with fear and doubt. But not everyone is aligned on whether or not Bane is a beneficial spell, with many pointing to Bless as a same-level but better spell.
It’s a debate that rages on the Reddit battlefield, but it boils down to creatures targeted by Bane getting a chance to save against Charisma, while Bless applies to your creatures and no check is needed. Bane affects 0-3 creatures depending on their saves while Bless affects 3. Both require concentration, both impact how strong attacks become and how likely the target is to save once affected. Bane tends to be more defensive while Bless tends to be more offensive.
Keep this argument in mind as we walk through the rules as written and thing about your party makeup, and the types of enemies you might encounter. Those with lower charisma are a better bet against Bane than those bandit bards out there. I’ll revisit this topic a bit further later on, but for now let’s take a look at the rules as written for Bane.
