Systemic change doesn’t always look loud — sometimes it looks like the quiet, everyday choices we make for children.
In this weekly Diversitybuds reflection, Clare explores how inclusive music education quietly reshapes what children grow up believing is “normal”.
This reflection was inspired by a conversation with a primary Head Teacher who shared a powerful noticing: that Diversitybuds resources are quietly redesigning the default picture children hold of who music is for — and, in doing so, gently rewriting the norms they grow up with.
Many well-meaning music education resources still centre white, Eurocentric and adult-led musical experiences, with diverse examples added later rather than woven into the everyday fabric of learning. The result is that systems remain unchanged, and children absorb a narrow picture of what music is and who it belongs to.
In this weekly reflection, Clare shares why everyday inclusive practice — quietly, consistently, without spotlight or special weeks — is how norms are truly rewritten. And why this matters far beyond music, shaping children’s sense of belonging, identity and possibility.
