The Cable Paloff Press with Thoracic Extension is an exercise that targets the core muscles, specifically the obliques and the muscles that support the spine. Here are the steps to perform it correctly:
1. Start by setting up a cable machine in a way that the cable pulley is positioned at chest height.
2. Stand perpendicular to the cable machine with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
3. Grasp the handle attached to the cable with both hands, bringing it close to your chest.
4. Stand far enough away from the machine so that there is tension in the cable.
5. Engage your core muscles by pulling your navel in towards your spine.
6. Begin the exercise by pressing the cable away from your body, fully extending your arms. Hold this position for a moment.
7. While maintaining the press, slowly rotate your torso away from the cable machine, allowing your arms to follow the movement.
8. Focus on twisting through your torso and feeling the muscles engaging in your core, obliques, and back.
9. At the end of the movement, your torso should be fully rotated away from the cable machine with your arms still extended.
10. Reverse the motion by bringing your arms back towards your chest, rotating your torso to face forward.
11. Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions, typically 8-12 on each side.
Remember to keep your core engaged and your hips stationary throughout the exercise to isolate the muscles targeted. Start with a weight/resistance that is challenging but allows you to maintain proper form.
