Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received a prize in Strasbourg given to her 23 years ago by the European Parliament.
Suu Kyi was awarded the Sakaharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 in recognition of her fight for democracy in Myanmar. At the time, Suu Kyi was was under house arrest and the southeast Asian country was controlled by a military junta.
Since being released in November 2010, her party has won 43 out of the 45 parliamentary seats available and she is currently leader of the opposition in the Myanmar Parliament and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
During her acceptance speech, Suu Kyi asked European countries to help Myanmar continue its struggle to become democratic. She wants international pressure to force the Myanmar government to continue with reforms.
"It is so important that we teach our children, our young people, the importance of freedom of thought. Freedom of thought begins with the right to ask questions. And this right, our people in Burma, have not had for so long, that some of our young people do not quite know how to ask questions," she told the European Parliament.
