In January, I convinced my cousin Sol and my friend Zia to endure, wind, rain, ice and snow so we could hike misery ridge at Smith Rock State Park. I was hoping to find some hardcore climbers making their way up a 5.13 with their rubber-soled shoes breaking ice on the rocks. We saw only a few people while at the park. They were wearing hiking boots and holding ski poles for stability.
We spent over an hour on the mile-long misery ridge trail, but the steep grade felt like we were trekking uphill indefinitely. The white peaks and quiet environment gave us incentive to continue. I like that there are not a lot of people here. Its pretty quiet. You cant climb, but you can hike, said Sol, halfway through the hike. Its a better experience because its unspoiled by tourists, besides us.
Reaching the summit gave us a breathtaking view of the park, making the whole journey worthwhile. We continued on the icy switchbacks on the mesa verde trail. After three hours of hiking, our trail looped back to the trailhead. Its a nice little hike, tiring on the legs, says Zia. Im very tired. I really enjoyed it.
