The beloved Advent carol was translated from Latin to English by John Mason Neale, an Anglican priest and scholar and a key figure in the Oxford Movement. It was published in his 1851 collection Mediaeval Hymns and Sequences.

A musician and colleague of Neale, Thomas Helmore adapted a solemn, minor-key 15th-century French processional chant for burials and paired it with Neale's translation, publishing it in The Hymnal Noted in 1854. This tune, now commonly called Veni Emmanuel, perfectly matched the hymn's tone of longing and anticipation.

And ransom captive Israel;
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.

2. O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
