Originally this series was released on VHS Video and called NVTC Naval Video Time Capsules. Episodes Of The Royal Navy.
Roland Smith the producer of these video episodes was motivated by the
frustration of knowing that in our lifetime one would have little chance
of ever seeing the best of our surviving WW2 naval film collection.
Born in Hartlepool he was taken to London as a child during the depression
years of the 1930s and joined the Royal Navy aged seventeen early in 1946 as an HO/Telegraphist. Sent to HMS ROYAL ARTHUR and GLENDOWER thence HMS SCOTIA, his training was concluded at Fort Southwick, Portsmouth. “These were exciting times”, for there he experienced additional instruction in going to sea on the destroyers OFFA and COMUS, and onboard classes spent on the NUBIAN and AURORA. Seeing the new battleship VANGUARD and finally a draft to Chatham Barracks for general service, which would be HMS TERROR, the Admiralty WT Station at Kranji, Singapore, ending with a draft to the destroyer COCKADE. Emigrated to Canada in 1952 and eventually to California where he worked for many years as an electronic technician including two years being spent on project APOLLO (man on the moon). Assigned overseas with the US Dept. of Defense to Fylingdales in Yorkshire. He remained back in the UK when his tour of duty was over. The urge to produce naval videos was yet to come.
His other hobbies included Music particularly Jazz of which he had a vast
collection including many rare broadcast items. His one regret was not fulfilling an ambition to write a book on Dido Class Cruisers, of which the ships wheel of the namesake proudly hangs in his home along with other Royal Naval memorabilia.
Roland R Smith died in March 2002, with much of his work unfinished.
