This is the story of the Bible’s Jews leaving Egypt, written in Yiddish for Hasidic kids. It is a fascinating cultural artifact because every Jewish character, from Moses to the Israelites, looks like a Hasidic Jew, with sidecurls, beards, and long frocks, even in ancient Egypt. The non-Jews, by contrast, wear jeans, caps, and are clean-shaven, reflecting how we imagined the world: that all non-Jews looked secular, and Jews could never look that way.
It is a beautiful and revealing window into how stories for children both shape and are shaped by a community’s mythologies. It also reflects the ahistorical streak that runs through Hasidic culture, where storytelling and moral tales often take precedence over historical fact.
In this video, I go through the pages of the book and translate as I go along, to bring viewers access to this marvelous and thought-provoking artifact that once framed my own early understanding of the world.
