I walked through the area with Vancouver's most vulnerable population. This video was taken in November 2024.
East Hastings Street, particularly in the Downtown Eastside (DTES), is one of Vancouver’s most economically challenged areas and is often referred to as one of the poorest urban neighborhoods in Canada. It is characterized by significant issues such as poverty, homelessness, and addiction. Many residents live in Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels, which are often in poor condition, while others struggle with homelessness, living in tents or shelters along the street.
The DTES is also the epicenter of Vancouver's opioid crisis, with high rates of substance use and overdose deaths. To combat this, harm reduction programs like Insite, North America’s first supervised injection site, provide critical services to reduce harm and save lives. Mental health challenges are also widespread, and many residents face barriers to accessing adequate healthcare. Despite these issues, the community is supported by numerous organizations offering food, shelter, and addiction services, including the Portland Hotel Society and Union Gospel Mission.
In recent years, efforts have been made to address the area’s challenges through investments in social housing, harm reduction, and healthcare. However, systemic issues like housing affordability and gentrification continue to put pressure on low-income residents. Despite the struggles, the DTES remains a resilient community with a rich cultural history, particularly among its Indigenous and Chinese-Canadian populations, and a hub for advocacy and social innovation.
