Manikarnika Ghat is one of the holiest cremation grounds among the sacred riverfronts, alongside the river Ganges, in the city of Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. In Hinduism, death is considered a gateway to another life marked by the result of one's karma.

What is so special about Manikarnika Ghat?
The Place Where Death Ends

Legend is that Lord Shiva gave the boon of eternal peace to the Manikarnika Ghat. It is believed that for thousands of years Lord Vishnu prayed to Lord Shiva asking that the holy city of Kashi, as Varanasi was known earlier, not be destroyed during the then planned annihilation of the world.

Is girls allowed in Manikarnika Ghat?
Bodies of the beloveds are brought here on a stretcher and bathed and prepared at the water's edge. Then through ceremony, the bodies are burned on piles of wood for several hours and then their ashes are scattered upon the Ganges. There are no Indian women allowed here... only men.

Can we bath in Manikarnika Ghat?
The bathing ceremony on the Manikarnika Ghat is performed during the last quarter of the night. Thousands of devotees from across the country gather at Varanasi during this propitious period. Hindu devotees offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati.
