Smith's sister Claudette Osborne was only 21 years old when she disappeared in July 2008, never to be heard from or seen again.

Bernadette helped start Drag the Red in Winnipeg following the death of Tina Fontaine.

She is now an NDP member of the Manitoba legislature.
