Here come the trials of all the Playwood mallets I own.
First I play the same thing with each pair, then I give some examples from orchestral repertoire.
For each pair I specify the state of the felt, brand new, recent, worn or very used (except for the flannel ones : it's irrelevant as the sound remains the same for all its lifespan). The brand new pairs will sound harder on the soft dynamics and darker on the forte, whereas the very used ones will react in the opposite way, clearer on loud dynamics and a very soft attack on the piano. « Worn » means to me that the pair is at its optimal state.
I also want to explain in which order I organized the trials. First the Classical series, from hard to soft. Then the Premium series, somehow from hard to soft but as this series is more complex, I compared the small pairs of each trio, then the medium ones, then the big models. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, I invite you to watch first the description video I made before.
Finally I try the flannel series, from the hardest pair I own to the softest, and not in the mini-series order. That's why I present the « 41 » pair before the « 22 », as it's made with hard wool and not soft cotton.
I hope everything is clear, don't hesitate to ask in the comments if you have any question !
I played for this video on Adams hammered timpani with plastic heads. I recorded it with a Zoom H1 (without any effect or treatment).
So the audio quality is limited, but I think it can give you a good general idea.
