Searching for the source of The River Avon - Finding a Battlefield and a Crash Site

Описание: As a new adventure we have decided to explore the River Avon, all the way from its source to Tewkesbury, where it joins the River Severn. In this video we travel to the village of Naseby and manage to get a glimpse of the source of the river, marked by a small conical monument in the garden of Manor Farm in the village. Many of you will have heard of Naseby as it is the site of a decisive battle during the English Civil War. The comprehensive victory for the Parliamentarian New Model Army, resulted in the decimation of the Royalist forces and the war ended the following year. We spend sometime getting to understand how the battle developed on 14th June 1645. We then follow the river to a field near Stanford Hall where we walk to a monument erected to a pioneering aviator, Percy Pilcher. He was the designer and builder of a series of gliders the last being The Hawk and ultimately he built a powered triplane. On 30th September 1899 he had planned to demonstrate the triplane in a field near to Stanford Hall, but it had suffered a mechanical failure, so he decided to fly The Hawk instead. The wet weather conditions on the day caused the canvas of the glider to become saturated, this resulted in the fabric contracting, putting excessive strain on the bamboo frame. Whilst in mid air the tail snapped and Pilcher plunged 30ft. He never recovered consciousness and died 2 days later from his injuries, with his triplane having never been publicly flown. We then try to find the old Dow Bridge, a place for crossing the Avon since Roman times. The old bridge is now some way from the new road bridge, so we could not get to visit this ancient landmark. We complete this first leg of our trip at Clifton on Dunsmore but we will be back to explore the Avon further and will learn more about its history and the places it passes through.
