Long ago modern sports and camel races were part of daily desert life, reflecting the bond between people and the “ships of the desert” — camels that sustained nomadic communities for centuries.
In 2020, camel racing was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its role as a social practice and festive heritage in Oman and the wider Gulf region. This distinction highlights not only the thrilling races themselves but also the knowledge, skills, customs and community traditions involved in preparing training and celebrating the camel race.
