During rehearsals for this year's Republic Day parade in New Delhi, the Indian army has unveiled an unusual piece of technology: rifle-mounted robotic dogs. Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, a video of these robot dogs marching alongside troops and armoured vehicles at Kartavya Path is going viral.
Ahead of Republic day celebration, Lieutenant Colonel Manoj Panwar said, "The Indian Army is currently going through a phase of transformation. During this transformation, we have incorporated various modern techniques and technologies into the Army. A few years ago, we inducted a robotic mule into the Indian Army, initially to assist in logistic supply. As you know, the Indian Army is deployed in remote and difficult terrains where regular vehicles cannot reach. In some areas, soldiers had to carry supplies on their backs or rely on pack animals like mules, which was very challenging..."
The four-legged machine, built to move across rough ground, drew instant attention from onlookers and defence watchers alike.
India will mark its 77th Republic Day this year. The date traces back to January 26, 1950, when the Constitution came into force, and the country formally became a sovereign republic. This year's celebrations will also mark 150 years of Vande Mataram, the national song that became a rallying cry during the freedom struggle.
